How to Activate Your eSIM Step by Step

How to Activate Your eSIM - Tutorial Cover

So you've just purchased a TellingSIM eSIM. Great choice! Now comes the part that trips up a lot of travelers: actually getting it set up. Don't worry, it's simpler than it sounds. This guide walks you through the whole process in plain language, from checking your phone to going online the moment you land.

Before You Start: Is Your Phone eSIM-Ready?

Not all phones support eSIM, so let's confirm yours does before anything else. The quickest way is to dial *#06# on your phone. If an EID number appears, you're good to go. Alternatively, head into your Settings and look for an "Add eSIM" or "Add Mobile Plan" option.

If you don't see either of those, your device may not support eSIM. In that case, reach out to our support team and we'll help you find the right solution.

Step 1: Get Your Activation Details Ready

After your purchase, you'll receive an email from TellingSIM with either a QR code or a set of activation details (SM-DP+ address and activation code). Keep that email handy, you'll need it in the next step.

Tip: If you're activating on the same device you use for email, screenshot the QR code or copy the activation details so you can access them without switching apps.

Step 2: Install the eSIM on Your Device

The steps vary slightly depending on whether you're on iPhone or Android, but the process is essentially the same.

On iPhone

  1. Go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM
  2. Tap "Use QR Code" and scan, or choose "Enter Details Manually"
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to finish installation

On Android

  1. Go to Settings → Connections (or Network & Internet) → SIM Manager
  2. Tap "Add eSIM" or "Add Mobile Plan"
  3. Scan the QR code or enter the details manually
  4. Confirm and wait for the eSIM to download

Once installed, the eSIM will appear in your SIM settings. Don't turn it on just yet though. It's best to activate it when you actually arrive at your destination.

Step 3: Activate When You Land

This is the step most people forget, and it's the most important one. Your TellingSIM eSIM is designed to activate at your destination, so here's what to do as soon as you arrive:

  1. Go to your phone's SIM or Cellular settings
  2. Find the TellingSIM eSIM and turn it ON
  3. Set it as your Mobile Data line
  4. Make sure Data Roaming is enabled
  5. Give it about 1 to 2 minutes to connect to the local network

You'll know it's working when you see the local carrier name appear in your status bar and your signal bars fill up. From there, you're online. No SIM swapping, no hunting for a local store.

Having Trouble Connecting?

It happens occasionally. Here are the most common fixes:

  • Restart your phone as this refreshes the network connection and often solves it instantly
  • Wait a few more minutes since some networks take 3 to 5 minutes to register a new eSIM
  • Double-check your settings: Is the TellingSIM eSIM enabled? Is it set as your data line? Is Data Roaming turned on?
  • Toggle Airplane Mode on and off to force your phone to search for a new network signal

If none of that works, don't stress. Contact our support team and we'll get you sorted quickly.

You're All Set

That's really all there is to it. Once you've done it once, activating an eSIM becomes second nature. Honestly, it's one of the best travel upgrades you can make. No more roaming fees, no more hunting for a SIM card at the airport, and no more dead zones in the first hours of your trip.

Safe travels, and enjoy staying connected. ✈️
